New Academic Year 2015-2016

On 17 November, Polytechnic of Leiria (IPLeiria) held a solemn opening ceremony of the new academic year 2015-2016, at the Teatro José Lúcio da Silva, in Leiria, which also marked the 35th anniversary of the Institute.

The opening ceremony brought together more than 700 people and was attended by students, teachers and employees of IPLeiria, local community representatives, national personalities and international delegations.

The beginning of each school year is the perfect opportunity to recognize individual achievements. The Polytechnic of Leiria awarded certificates to meritorious students with high achievements in study, presenting them with scholarships. Seventeen employees of the Institute where also distinguished in this ceremony for completing 25 years of service.

The President expressed is gratitude to relevant partners like NERLEI – Business Association of Leiria Region for their support and accompaniment. The UNIVATES (Brazil) and the Macao Polytechnic Institute, were awarded with the institution Merit Diploma.

António Correia e Silva, Minister of Higher Education, Science and Cape Verde Innovation and José Ribeiro Vieira, engineer, were awarded with the Honoris-causa title regarding their relevant role on their community.

The ceremony had special significance, with  high moments like Lectio Magistralis proffered by the guest of honor, the Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation of Cape Verde – António Correia –  entitled “Higher education in a society in transformation and searching to tighten bonds with Lusophone integration.” This was the motto of his dissertation, where he explained the Cape Verde higher education path until the present and the mobilization around the education topic.

The Cape Verde minister also highlighted what he thinks is the role of the Portuguese language in the future of education in his country, which he thinks is capable of opening new doors for interaction with other cultures and increase the efficiency and effectiveness of teaching.
