Tourism and Recreation  tedqual

The main objective of the degree in Tourism and Recreation is to train graduates that are able to perform functions in companies, agencies and other entities within the tourism sector, in particular relating to Tourism Recreation, in its multiple sides: sporting, cultural, environmental, historical and recreational.
The study cycle aims to provide students with skills that serve as the structural basis for the deepening of general concepts related to tourism and other more specific sectors, through the curricular units that feature the tourism recreation field, in the referred areas. The development of transversal skills, such as: communication, language training, entrepreneurship, creativity and personal initiative are also objectives of this degree, aiming at the integral formation of citizens.

Marine Biology

The Bachelor’s Programme in Marine Biology aims for training professionals with a solid preparation in the fundamental areas of Marine Biology, using a dynamic teaching/learning methodology, supported by a strong practical training component. This programme provides technicalscientific skills that enable an active contribution to the sustainable management of marine biological resources, namely through activities related to Marine Biology, Aquaculture, Fisheries and Environmental Conservation; provide graduates in Marine Biology with important modern tools in the field of biology. The Marine Biology programme intends to train technicians capable of collaborating with companies and institutions related to fishing, aquaculture, marine biotechnology, food technology, nature tourism and ecotourism and environmental consultancy, as well as to pursue a specialization in terms of cycles more advanced studies (MSc. and PhD.).

Biotechnology

The degree in Biotechnology intends to give students solid scientific and technical expertise and comprehension in order to integrate the labor market for biotechnology-based companies (food processing, marine, pharmaceutical, environmental, or similar), as well as generate interest in pursuing studies at the 2nd cycle. Its multidisciplinary nature, including in the area of management, contributes to the development of skills that enable the development of entrepreneurial initiatives, as well as strengthen the link between applied research and commercialization of new products.

A degree in Biotechnology aims to confer students with autonomy, critical thinking, communication skills and creativity, allowing them to successfully design and develop any professional project or scientific and technological research in the field of Biotechnology

The degree in Event Management aims to train technicians with superior knowledge and skills to plan, coordinate and control activities related to event management, as well as define the human, material and financial resources in order to provide a service quality. The Tourism and Hotel Management degree main aim is to develop skills in the areas of Travel Management and Hospitality Management, emphasizing an integrated perspective of the development and implementation of policies and action plans of each tourism company and each department of a hotel. In the area of Travel Management, the training for the exercise of professional activities within the tourism industry is especially valued, ensuring students with a component of application of knowledge and with the understanding of the specific activities of different professional profiles, regarding direction and management. In the area of Hospitality Management, the formation of graduates able to perform tasks such as planning, organization, coordination, leadership, control and evaluation of a tourism company departments or at a hotel is promoted.

Restaurant and Catering Management

Provide knowledge and essential skills, with the intention of organizing and strategically structure the sector for future challenges in the restaurant industry. Qualify professionals able to dominate the management, organization of technical and direction of restaurants, catering enterprises, hotels and food production enterprises. Promote the development and mastery of technical and scientific skills in food control areas, the level of its confection, plating and service. Promoting a culture ofrigor and motivation contributing to the differentiation of the food and beverage manager through the acquisition of specific skills and techniques for the implementation of a quality service. Increase notoriety of companies in the sector with the collaboration of graduates in Restaurant and Catering Management with the implementation of knowledge and skills acquired throughout their education in the degree.

Food Engineering 

The Degree in Food Engineering results from a partnership between the School of Tourism and Technology of the Sea (ESTM) of the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria (IPL), the Superior Agricultural School (ESA) of the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança (IPB) and the School of Technology and Management (ESTG) of the Polytechnic Institute of Viana de Castelo (IPVC).

The curricular structure is supported by the Project Based Learning (PBL) methodology in which there is an active participation in learning.

In the 1st and 2nd semester the training is given in the three institutions simultaneously, providing students with basic scientific and technical sciences applied to Engineering.

In the 3rd, 4th and 5th semester students are obliged to move to ESTG (IPVC), ESTM (IPLeiria) and ESA (IPB) respectively where they are taught the processing technologies and food quality analysis .On the 6th semester students will return to their home institution. In addition to interacting with the local business fabric in the development of a product or process, they prepare the engineering design work that should allow the student to integrate all the knowledge of Food Engineering.

The objective of the Tourism Course is the training of graduates able to carry out a range of tasks in agents related to the tourism sector. It is precisely in the level of qualification and expertise required to human resources included in tourism that is based the necessary innovation. The expansion of the sector requires the development of new products, new processes and new methods that can only be pursued with the acquisition of a set of professional skills, based on a training, which is itself more adjusted to qualifications that conduce to true agents of change.

 

 


Masters Courses – 2nd cycle (Second cycle)

Aquaculture

In the present study cycle we aim to provide the students with advanced training in the area of Aquaculture. The Master’s course therefore seeks to apply current knowledge of modern and sustainable aquaculture, biologic concepts in nutrition, reproduction among others, planning and production and management of aquaculture facilities. The Aquaculture Master provides students with a logical sequence of learning that allows the acquisition of skills to perform the R&D, creation of new companies and coordination functions or direction in aquaculture companies. The structure of this course is divided into two distinct phases. Initially it provides a solid education that will allow the acquisition of skills in specific areas of aquaculture, lasting two semesters. The teachers involved, consisting mainly of PhD are a guarantee of and advanced quality and appropriate to the target level for a Master degree.

Blue and Circular Economy

The transition to the circular economy is one of the European Union’s major goals, and to this end, it is important to empower the actors and entities directly involved in socio-economic development processes. This transition is particularly relevant in the context of the blue economy, where the vast majority of sectors depend on bio-resources and the proper functioning of marine ecosystems that sustain services that are central to the survival of humanity.
This masters’ program will address these issues, as well as the existing and innovative solutions, examples of interactions between academia, industry, and public authorities to promote the blue economic and social development of coastal communities. In addition, bioproducts and biomaterials that create systems that tend to be waste-free will also be addressed.
Business models based on the circular economy will be developed, fostering innovative solutions for the blue economy that can contribute to the socio-economic development.

Marine Resources Biotechnology

The MSc in Marine Resources Biotechnology aims to provide students with advanced training in the area of Biotechnology with application to marine resources, seeking to apply current knowledge of biology and biotechnology to the study, protection and development of marine resources. This training gives students scientific expertise and solid and comprehensive techniques in order to integrate into the labor market in biotechnology-based companies or perform R&D activities, or even continue 3rd cycle studies. It seeks to develop autonomy, critical thinking, communication skills and creativity that allows the student to design and develop successful professional or scientific and technological research projects and careers in the area.

Food Safety and Quality Managementy

The MSc in Food Safety and Quality Management aims to provide students skills to respond effectively to issues related with quality management and food security. It seeks to prepare students for careers in the national and international food chain: working in national and local government; academia and research; food production, processing, retail sectors and related areas. This training gives students scientific expertise and solid and comprehensive techniques in order to assess and solve practical problems related to feeding activity, particularly in quality control and safety and integration of innovative concepts of quality management, as well as to perform R&D activities, or even continue 3rd cycle studies..

Food Engeneering

The Master in Food Engineering results from a partnership between the School of Tourism and Technology of the Sea – Peniche (ESTM) of the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria (IPLeiria) and the School of Technology and Management (ESTG) of the Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo (IPVC), institutions located in regions with a strong business component in the agro-food sector.

The cycle of studies is organized in 4 semesters. In the 1st and 2nd semesters, each institution offers a common core of curricular units (UC’s in areas such as Food Quality and Safety, Food Technology and Process Dynamics and Control. In the second semester, the curricular plan also includes optional courses. Each student will have the possibility of attending 3 optional subjects, in a total of 15 ECTS, which will be taught at the ESTG-IPVC or the ESTM-IPLeiria, according to curricular plan.

In the 3rd and 4th semesters, the student may opt for the development of a research work, leading to the preparation of a scientific dissertation, a project work or an internship in a business environment. The guidelines for this work will be shared by professors from ESTG-IPVC and ESTM-IPLeiria, which will enable the achievement of a diploma signed and recognized by both institutions.

Hotel Management

The Master in Hotel Management aims to provide a professional training and specialized in hotel management. In addition to providing a deeper knowledge, the course enables the operationalization of the concepts and practical application of management tools in making decisions in the exercise of functions in the area of Hospitality Management. The Master is designed not only for those who want a professional valuation, but also for those who aspires to an adequate preparation of technical and scientific basis for developing applied research to hotels as well, is particularly essential for those wishing to develop functions in the area hotel management or consultancy achieve advanced studies on complex issues in this area.

Sustainable Tourism Management 

The Master in Sustainable Tourism Management aims the training of students able to perform tasks in various branches of tourism, whether in public or in private sector, develop higher-level knowledge about the various disciplines that integrate the course, adapting the principles and concepts underlying the Management and Sustainability in Tourism.

This master’s programme is taught in English and in the B-Learning system. This method combines online and face-to-face learning, allowing students to access the platform from any place, at any time, letting them access all knowledge and materials relevant to the subjects being taught. Blended learning allows adaptive, collaborative learning and encourages students to be active in the experience of learning rather than being passive learners. The subjects will provide the tools needed to develop an integrated and sustainable management of tourism resources.

Online learning is the major component. In the first year this course is delivered, each semester, 13 weeks online and 2 weeks in face-to-face lessons. Regarding the second year the students must choose one of three options: an applied research work (Dissertation) or an Internship (and its report) or a Project/Business Plan. In any of the options the student will always be accompanied by a supervisor. Although it is mostly a distance-learning study programme, you won’t be alone. Our school members provide the high levels of support to enhance your success. You will have the occasion to work closely with your colleagues and tutors in a suitably supported and collaborative online learning environment, studying at the times and in the places which suit you best.

Marketing and Tourism Promotion

The Master in Marketing and Tourism Promotion aims to provide vocational and specialized training in marketing applied to tourism. In addition to providing a deeper knowledge the course allows the operationalization of the concepts and practical application of management tools in making decisions in the exercise of functions in the Marketing and Promotion of Tourism. The Master of MTP is designed not only for those who want a professional valuation, but also for those who need an adequate scientific preparation for further studies in this area of expertise. Thus, the MTP Master is essential for those wishing to develop roles in tourism or pursue advanced studies in this area. This training will enhance also the technical skills for the different areas where tourism is necessary to promote the awareness and attractiveness of tourist destinations.

Tourism and Environment

The major challenges facing the development of tourism in Portugal are deeply linked to sustainability and environmental tourism, viewed from the perspective of economic, social, ecological and cultural. The Higher Technical Professional Course in Recreation in Adventure and Nature Tourismaims to train professionals capable of planning, coordinating and organizing tourist animation activities in Nature and Adventure Tourism, respecting sustainability, the well-being of tourists and safety and preservation standards of the environment.

Food Catering and Production

The Higher Technical Professional Course in Food Catering and Production aims to train professionals who conceive, organize and execute food preparation and groundwork activities, following the trends of evolution and creativity in terms of cuisine and gastronomy, and respecting the principles of seasonality, nutrition and food hygiene.
