How to apply

1. National Admission for Higher Education (CNAES)

The access to public higher education through the general regime is held annually through the submission of an application on the national admission organized by General Directorate for Higher Education. It takes place at the end of the school year and it is organized into three phases, according to the annually approved calendar.

Managing all this process related to competency assessment to attend a course as well as to set candidate selection criteria for enrollment and registration in public higher education falls under the exclusive competence of the National Admission Commission for Higher Education.

Target audience

To be able to apply students must:

  • Hold a secondary School Leaving Certificate with a final average equivalent to the Portuguese secondary education; this equivalence can be obtained in General Directorate for Education.
  • Perform, or having performed in the last two years, the national final exams of secondary education corresponding the entrance exams required to apply to the specific courses students wish to attend;
  • Perform the prerequisites  (evidence of Physical, functional or vocational skills) if required by the institution for the course students wish to attend.

2. Special Regimes

Target audience

To be able to apply to special regimes in public higher education, students must be in one of the following situations:

  1. Portuguese government officials on Portuguese diplomatic mission abroad and accompanying relatives;
  2. Portuguese fellowship holders abroad or public officials on Portuguese diplomatic mission abroad and accompanying relatives;
  3. Officers of permanent personnel of the Portuguese armed forces, within the context of specific armed forces training needs.
  4. Portuguese-speaking African countries fellowship holders, within the framework of conventions celebrated by the Portuguese government.
  5. Foreign officials on diplomatic mission approved in Portugal and their relatives residing in the country, in conditions of reciprocity.
  6. Athletes with a top-level status or integrated in High Competition careers referred to in Decree-Law no. 125/95, of May 31, amended by  Decree-Law no. 123/96, of August 10, regulated by the Decree no. 947/95, of August 1.
  7. East Timor nationals and children.

3. Special Access Regimes

Target audience

To be able to apply to a special access students must:

  1. Be over the age of 23 with approval in special examinations suitable for assessing the ability to attend higher education;
  2. Hold a technological specialization diploma;
  3. Hold a higher professional technician diploma;
  4. Hold other higher education programmes.

Specific entrance examinations for access to higher education headed for holders of a technological specialization diploma (CET)

According to amendment no.1 and annulment of no. 3 to no. 6 of the article 8.º from Decree-Law no. 113/2014, of July, 16, resulting from the Decree-Law no. 63/2016 of September, 13, there will be no specific entrance examinations for access to higher education headed for holders of a technological specialization diploma within the framework of special access regimes in the academic year of 2016/2017.

 

4. Readmission regimes.

Target audience

To be able to apply to a readmission regime students must:

  • Have been enrolled or registered in Portuguese higher education institutions.
  • Have been enrolled or registered in Portuguese higher education institutions in a course defined as a higher education degree by the country legislation as long as they haven’t finished it.

5. International Student Programmes

Target audience

Every student with no Portuguese nationality is able to apply to Undergraduate Programmes of the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria through specific International Student Programmes. And also students:

  1. With no nationality of a Member State of the European Union;
  2. With no legal residence in Portugal for more than two years, in a continuous way, in August 31 of the year in which they intend to start in a higher education course;
  3. With no Portuguese higher education attendance within the framework of an international mobility programme.

 

The students that manage to enter in a higher education degree under an international student programme will keep this status until the completion of their studies.
