Research & Innovation at the Polytechnic University of Leiria Earns Top Recognition from FCT<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Polytechnic University of Leiria now counts eight R&D units rated \u2018Excellent\u2019 and five rated \u2018Very Good\u2019 <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Of the 15 Research & Development (R&D) Units at IPLeiria, eight have been rated \u2018Excellent\u2019 and five \u2018Very Good\u2019, with the remaining two receiving a \u2018Good\u2019 classification. <\/strong>These results were announced on April 15, 2025, by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT)<\/strong><\/a>, following a national evaluation of R&D performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThese results highlight the quality of our research units and represent a recognition of the excellence, dedication, and commitment of our research teams,\u201d <\/strong>said the President of the Polytechnic University of Leiria. \u201cOur institutional goal has been to ensure that R&D+i activities generate positive impact \u2014 both locally and nationally \u2014 and demonstrate global relevance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n This new evaluation effectively doubles the number of IPLeiria\u2019s research units awarded \u2018Excellent\u2019 or \u2018Very Good\u2019, <\/strong>reinforcing the institution\u2019s role in knowledge creation and sharing.<\/strong> It also opens new opportunities for developing doctoral programmes<\/strong> and launching innovative research projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n IPLeiria\u2019s 15 R&D Units include five fully managed by the Polytechnic, seven where it leads local branches (hubs), and three where it is represented through delegations. These span diverse fields such as Social Sciences and Humanities, Engineering and Exact Sciences, Natural and Environmental Sciences, and Life and Health Sciences. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n Among the five fully managed units, three were rated \u2018Excellent\u2019: CDRSP \u2013 Centre for Rapid and Sustainable Product Development<\/a>; ciTechCare – Center for Innovative Care and Health Technology<\/a> ; LiDA – The Laboratory in Design and Arts<\/a>. The remaining two \u2014 CIIC \u2013 Computer Science and Communication Research Centre and<\/a> CARME \u2013 Centre of Applied Research in Management and Economics<\/a> \u2014 received \u2018Very Good\u2019 ratings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Among the units with IPLeiria delegations, two were rated \u2018Excellent\u2019 and one \u2018Very Good\u2019. Of the seven branch-led units, three received \u2018Excellent\u2019, two \u2018Very Good\u2019, and two \u2018Good\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Altogether, these research units have been awarded approximately 40 million euros in funding for the period from 2025 to 2029.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Research, development, and innovation (R&D+i) are central to the mission of the Polytechnic University of Leiria. <\/strong>The institution continues to strengthen its commitment to producing and disseminating knowledge, while proposing innovative and sustainable solutions to tackle complex challenges in today\u2019s competitive global landscape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The FCT\u2019s evaluation covered scientific and technological activities carried out between January 1, 2018, and December 31, 2023, as well as the strategic goals, organizational structure, and activity plans for 2025\u20132029. More than 315 international evaluators from 35 countries participated in this process, working across 29 disciplinary panels. The evaluation included over 1,300 remote interviews and 29 weeks of on-site visits.
