A true story, inspired by the life of John Merrick, who lived in London in the second half of the 19th century. A young man with a terrible deformity is the main attraction in a freak show. A doctor decides to take him in at one of the city’s most important hospitals. In no time, Merrick goes from being a sideshow attraction to the darling of aristocrats and intellectuals. His hope of one day having a ‘normal’ life ultimately proves impossible. A multi-award-winning play by Bernard Pomerance about the human condition, ugliness, the idea of normality, set against the unique backdrop of Victorian England.
