This seminar will have three parts. After a brief introduction to my work in the visual arts, we will discuss the film Fogo no Lodo, which I directed with Catarina Laranjeiro between 2016 and 2023. We’ll see some parts of the film, talk about the process of making it, from the initial research in the field to the filming work in Guinea-Bissau and the subsequent editing. Next, I’ll talk about the academic research I’m doing for my PhD in Anthropology on war as an inducer of vision. I will discuss my ethnographic work, its processes, the type of material I collect and the way I work with it in my writing, through the constitution of a plot of ‘characters’, places, objects and materials that lead me to discuss concepts – for example, the concept of ‘thing’, vernacular photography, anthropological image, ethnographic image – linked to experiences of vision, some even visionary, in the context of the colonial war in Guinea-Bissau.
