Fazer
Frederico Duarte e Vera Sacchetti
SEMINAR
MAY 13TH OF 2024, 3PM
ROOM 54 EP1 – ESAD.CR
Conceived and directed by two design critics and curators, as a magazine and curatorial project Fazer aims to focus the attention of a broad public sphere on how design contributes to the major societal transformations we are living. As an institution, it also represents a new generation and thinking around the discipline of design in the Portuguese language. The two stages of the exhibition, in Lisbon and Porto, present an experience of curating as editing and vice versa. Opening with the presentation of the table of contents of each magazine issue and most of its contents, they conclude with the launch of the respective printed publication. In each case, the content created for the pages of the magazine is arranged in the space of the galleries, which are used as both an exhibition and a discursive vehicle. In addition, they will organize public programs dedicated to the themes covered in the magazine, introducing critical perspectives on recent results in design practice.
Vera Sacchetti (Lisbon, 1983) is a design critic and curator based in Basel, Switzerland. She works as a curator, researcher and editor. Recently, she co-founded Fazer, a new design magazine in Portugal; co-initiated the Design & Democracy platform (2020-), which maps the intersections between design and democratic systems and practices; and was programme coordinator for the multidisciplinary research initiative on sustainable futures Driving the Human: Seven Prototypes for Eco-social Renewal (2020-2023). Sacchetti teaches at HEAD Geneva and Design Academy Eindhoven, and has been a member of the Federal Design Commission of the Swiss Confederation since 2020.
Frederico Duarte (Lisbon, 1979) is a design critic and curator. He has a degree in communication design from FBAUL, an MA in design criticism from SVA and a PhD in curating from Birkbeck College and the Victoria & Albert Museum. He is currently a visiting assistant professor at FBAUL, communications coordinator for the Bauhaus of the Seas Sails project at IST’s Interactive Technologies Institute and co-founder of Fazer magazine.
