This lecture will focus on writing and photography as both inseparable and contrasting practices and concepts in the work and thought of Hervé Guibert. The Ghost Image (L’Image fantôme, 1981) — a hypothetical response to Roland Barthes’ Camera Lucida (La chambre claire, 1980), an essential work of photographic theory and visual studies — will be taken as an angle from which to analyze Guibert’s thinking and interartistic work in the fields of fictional and autobiographical writing, photography and cinema. Special attention will be paid to the way in which the “ghost image” or the ghost haunting the image, in Guibert and others, is intimately linked to writing and photography, either as a theme and figure in each of these distinct art forms or as the basis for a mutual haunting.
