RUN-EU

Brief introduction

RUN-EU (Regional University Network – European University) was founded in 2020, as part of the European Universities Initiative promoted by the European Commission.

It is an alliance of eight higher education institutions from different regions of Europe, united by the common goal of promoting the sustainable economic, social, cultural, and environmental progress of their communities.

Founding institutions:

  • Polytechnic University of Leiria (Portugal)
  • Polytechnic University of Cávado and Ave (Portugal)
  • Technological University of the Shannon – TUS (Ireland)
  • NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences (Netherlands)
  • Häme University of Applied Sciences – HAMK (Finland)
  • Fachhochschule Vorarlberg – FHV (Austria)
  • Universidad de Burgos (Spain)
  • Howest – Hogeschool West-Vlaanderen (Belgium)

To be integrated by the end of 2025:

  • Technical University of Liberec – TUL (Czech Republic)
  • University of Galati – UGAL (Romania)

Mission and vision

RUN-EU’s mission is to train citizens and professionals with the skills of the future, capable of responding to Europe’s major social, digital, and environmental challenges.

Through multinational and interdisciplinary cooperation, this alliance seeks to strengthen innovation, inclusion, and regional competitiveness, with a particular focus on regions outside major urban centers.

Arts and Design in RUN-EU

In the field of arts, design, and culture, the School of Arts and Design of Caldas da Rainha (ESAD.CR) finds strong affinities and complementarities with several partner institutions, creating opportunities for:

  • the development of joint programs and collaborative projects;
  • student and faculty mobility;
  • and new forms of interdisciplinary and international cooperation.

Although there are points of contact with all RUN-EU institutions, two institutions stand out:

  • Howest (Belgium) – through its Schools of Industrial Design, Graphic Design, and Digital Design (DEVINE), located in Kortrijk, a city recognized by UNESCO as a Creative City of Design. Howest is also one of Europe’s leading institutions in the field of digital games and interactive entertainment. In Bruges, the School of Architecture offers the innovative Architecture and Design course, which is of interest to all ESAD.CR students, especially those studying Spatial Design.
  • Technological University of the Shannon – Limerick School of Art and Design (Ireland) – offering courses in Fine Arts, Industrial Design, Graphic and Multimedia Design, Digital Design, Interior Design, Animation, Cinema and Sound.

In addition to these, there are examples of learning and collaboration opportunities at other RUN-EU institutions, such as:

  • HAMK (Finland) – the Sustainable Design course includes learning about ceramic and footwear design;
  • NHL Stenden (Netherlands) – the Design Factory offers a teaching model based on real projects developed in partnership with companies.

RUN-EU represents a European network for collaboration and innovation, opening up new perspectives for ESAD.CR.
