In the experiences of beauty and art

João Constâncio

OPEN CLASS
OCTOBER 22TH OF 2025, 1.30PM
AUDITORIUM OF EP.1 – ESAD.CR

In this open lecture, João Constâncio, Full Professor in the Department of Philosophy at NOVA University, will discuss the nature of the experience of beauty and art from the perspective of philosophy and literature. This session will challenge students from a wide range of ESAD disciplines to reflect on the meanings of the concepts of eros, beauty, truth, and art and to question the permanence of certain experiences and ideas in modernity, even though they have been transformed by the passage of time.Author of a monograph on Hieronymus Bosch’s The Temptations of Saint Anthony (On the Absurd. Temptations of Saint Anthony, by Hieronymus Bosch, Lisbon, Documenta, 2024) and a monograph on Plato’s Phaedrus (Three Discourses on Eros. Meditation on Plato’s Phaedrus, Lisbon, Tinta-da-China, 2025), João Constâncio will pose questions that are perhaps unanswerable, but perennial and urgent. He will then engage in dialogue with participants.

João Constâncio is Full Professor of Philosophy at the Philosophy Department of the NOVA University Lisbon, where he teaches since 1996. He earned his PhD there in 2005 with a dissertation on the images and conceptions of human life in Plato.
