Biotechnology and Art: Exploring Creativity through Science
3rd year of the degree in Biotechnology– ESTM IPLeiria
WORKSHOP
APRIL 9TH OF 2026, 10AM
ROOM 34 EP1 – ESAD.CR
Biotechnology and art converge in a space where creativity meets real biological processes. This activity offers a practical and accessible approach, exploring how living materials and natural phenomena can be used as means of artistic expression. Throughout the session, participants will carry out various experiments, including yeast fermentation with gas production, DNA extraction from fruit, the extraction of natural pigments with colour variation
depending on pH, and the creation of bioplastics from starch. These activities allow fundamental biological processes to be observed in a visual and interactive way, whilst promoting experimentation, creativity and a new perspective on the relationship between science and art. No prior experience is necessary, as the activity is aimed at students, artists and curious individuals interested in exploring new forms of creation through biotechnology.
