The School of Education and Social Sciences (ESECS) was founded in 1979. Currently, ESECS has more than 2000 students attending the different training programs and 180 teachers.
Regarding the infrastructures, ESECS has three teaching buildings with classrooms, laboratories (multimedia, languages, sciences and mathematics), study rooms, sports hall, the Centre for Chinese Language and Culture, the Centre for Digital Inclusion (CRID), the “IPlay” Radio and studios for audiovisual works.
ESECS develops its training activity in the areas of Human and Social Sciences, Communication and Teacher Training. The School also develops a broad and diverse set of research activities and community-related activities, within its areas of competence. This may confer a very specific nature to the teaching that is provided, involving students and teachers in activities that enhance the learning whether by research or by its implementation.
Originally this School was only committed to teacher training activities, offering several undergraduate degree programmes within the areas of pre-school, primary-school and middle-school education. Today the School presents 1st Cycle Degrees in the areas of: Human Relations and Organizational Communication; Primary Education; Social Communication and Multimedia Education; Social Education; Social Work; Sports and Well-Being; and Translation and Interpretation Portuguese/Chinese and Chinese/Portuguese.
ESECS gives great importance to the Continuous Training, offering Specialization Courses, Post-Graduation and Master Degrees Programs in the field of Education and Social Sciences.
Besides the training activities in the Campus the School has been developing a great number of projects (educational, training, research and international cooperation) implemented through strategic partnerships with national and international institutions. In this domain, besides the European dimension, there is a considerable cooperation with Portuguese Speaking African Countries, with Brazil and also with China.
Today ESECS is a landmark in the region. Together with the other four Schools contributes to consolidate IPL as a reference institution in the country.

The School of Technology and Management (ESTG) was originally founded in 1989/1990, with 100 students and three bachelor degrees. The School was created under the Government’s law no. 46/85, dated November 22nd, and is currently the biggest higher education institution of Leiria and one of the largest in the country.
The ESTG, in this academic year, has around 5,000 students attending undergraduate and Master degree programmes, lectured in day, evening or distance learning classes, in the fields of engineering, technology, management, public administration, and legal sciences, and 330 teachers.
In an effort to provide the best teaching and learning conditions to its students, IPLeiria has invested in modern, well-equipped facilities. It also provides a range of support services of excellent quality at the level of basic social support (scholarships, canteens, restaurants, student residences and medical services), psychological and psycho-pedagogical support and, furthermore, it also allows access to a variety of documentary and bibliographical resources (Libraries, B-on – Digital Scientific Library).
ESTG is part of Campus 2, and has five buildings: Building A – pedagogical building; Building B – administrative and academic services; Building C – research and projects; Building D – pedagogical building; and Building E – pedagogical building of the degree in Automotive Engineering. Campus 2 also includes the School of Health Sciences (ESSLei), Library José Saramago, several car parks, canteens, bars and snack-bars, a bank agency and a book shop. ESTG has several laboratories and spaces for practical classes, which are under the responsibility of the School’s departments.
ESTG offers several undergraduate degree programmes within the abovementioned areas: Accountancy and Finance; Automotive Engineering; Civil Engineering; Computer Engineering; Electrical and Electronic Engineering; Energy and Environmental Engineering; Health Equipment Technology; Industrial Engineering and Management; Management; Marketing; Mechanical Engineering; Public Administration; and Solicitorship.
ESTG gives great importance to continuous training, offering Master degree programmes, also in the fields of engineering, technology, management, public administration, and legal sciences.
ESTG is strongly committed to advanced learning training, service rendering to the community, research, and technology transfer, as it is proven by the many projects and partnerships that the School has established, mainly with companies from Leiria, but also with national and international universities and economic agents.
The School develops a broad and diverse set of research and community-related activities, within its areas of expertise. This confers a very specific nature to the teaching that is provided, involving students and teachers in activities that enhance learning, whether by research or by its implementation.
ESTG is also recognized as a Cisco Academy, a Microsoft Academy, an Oracle Academy, and an Edunet Academy.
Today ESTG is a landmark in Leiria. Together with the other four Schools it contributes to consolidating IPLeiria as an institution of reference in the country.

The School of Arts and Design at Caldas da Rainha (ESAD.CR) was founded in 1988. The ESAD.CR has about 1400 students and 140 lectures.
The ESAD.CR favours teaching methodologies focused on personal development, creativity and project implementation, stimulating the spirit of initiative and hands on. The school has two teaching buildings, one library building, and one bar and canteen building.
The school has also a wide-range of technical capacities with several Workshops, Studios and Laboratories. It has 7 workshops: audiovisual, digital/graphic, serigraphy and printing-making, wood, metal, ceramic, plaster and glass, and theatre; 2 laboratories (prototyping and photography) and 1 photography studio. The School has strong links with several entities: enterprises, cultural and artistic organizations, aiming at developing collaborative projects. Every year, the ESAD.CR and its students organize cultural, artistic and social events with the purpose of showing the community the work developed, e.g., among others, The EVA Festival (a multimedia festival), the OFÉLIA Festival ( an international theater festival), The COMUNICAR DESIGN (a graphic conference with lectures, workshops, and exhibitions in the field), The Caldas Late Night (an artistic event with students performances among the Caldas da Rainha city), The INFRAME (a film festival in which students are challenged to make their films in 24 hours and show them), Fine Art Exhibitions
The following undergraduate degrees are offered at ESAD.CR: Fine Arts; Interior and Spatial Design; Industrial Design; Ceramic and Glass Design; Graphic and Multimedia Design; Theatre; Sound and Image.
The school also presents 4 masters: Fine Arts; Product Design; Graphic Design; Cultural Management.
The well-known Italian magazine Domus ranked ESAD.CR among the 31best schools in Europe in the category of Product Design, for 2013 and 2014, in its ranking of the “Europe’s top 100 schools of architecture and design”.
The School also has a strong international cooperation network, being one of the IPLeiria schools more attractive for foreign students. The school has Italian, Japanese, Brazilian, and Turkish students enrolled at the master’s degree level as well as students from all over the world: Europe (Spain, France, Italy, Switzerland, Holland, Norway, United Kingdom, Hungary, Poland, Germany, Greece, Sweden, Belgium, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Romania), Asia, and South American Continent.
The lecturers in ESAD.CR are well-known in the artistic and design community and have been distinguished with national and international awards from the most notable artistic and cultural institutions.
ESAD.CR/IPLeiria has an intensive activity, being acknowledged by its intellectual capital and creativity and by the achievement of more than 250 awards. These prizes, the result of students and lecturers’ participation in national and international competitions, were awarded by, among others, the Eletronic Arts Festival (digital arts) in Linz, Austria, the Ariane Rothshild Foundation (visual arts), the Festival Cinanima (short animation film festival) and the Festival Monstra (short animation film festival). The school also received the award for the Best European Design School 2002 at the Biennale of Saint Etienne, France.

The School of Tourism and Maritime Technology is located in Peniche facing the Atlantic Ocean (one hour by car from Lisbon to the North and one hour by car from Leiria to the south).
ESTM is a privileged place to study, with fine people, Berlengas’ natural marine reserve as landscape, sandy beaches and many diving and surf spots in the vicinity. There are 130 teachers and 1300 students in ESTM.
The School of Tourism and Maritime Technology is a public school of higher education that promotes knowledge, creates, transmits and disseminates culture, science, technology, guided research and experimental development.
Furthermore, ESTM has a strong connection to the community that surrounds it, and is governed by quality standards that ensure adequate response to the needs of the region in which it operates and the country.
The following undergraduate degrees (1st cycle degrees) are taught in ESTM: Marine Biology and Biotechnology; Tourism and Recreation; Food Engineering ; Food Safety and Technology ; Leisure Management and Business Tourism; Tourism and Hotel Management; Marketing for Tourism; Restaurant Industry and Catering ; and Tourism.
The UNWTO – World Tourism Organization awarded the quality certification TEDQUAL – Quality Assurance for Tourism Education, Training and Research Programmes – to all six degrees in the field of tourism.
ESTM offers the following master degree Programs (2nd Cycle Studies): Aquaculture; Biotechnology of Marine Resources; Hotel Management; Quality Management and Food Safety; Management and Sustainability in Tourism; Marketing and Tourism Promotion; and Tourism and Environment.
The ESTM’s mission is to provide initial training, continuing and postgraduate education, with high quality standards in the areas of Tourism and Maritime Science and Technology, the development of research activities and provision of services in order to: train professionals with high level of preparation in the scientific, technical and cultural aspects; carry out research and investigation activities; organize and implement projects for upgrading and retraining; scientific, technical and cultural exchange with counterpart institutions or with similar or convergent objectives and the provision of services to the community in the scientific and technological areas in which the School is active.
The ESTM’s main goal is to build a school of reference in the field of tourism, especially when the region in which it operates is markedly tourist, having been focusing strongly on new tourism products that have attracted new consumer profiles and, in turn, have stimulated investment in new tourist developments of high quality.
The focus on the creation of an institution of reference in this area is consolidated by the association of this course to other courses related to the study of the same phenomenon, with very specialized emphases and targeted training for qualified professionals.
The need to adapt a training perfectly related to the new realities of the market dictates, therefore, the urgency to adapt the traditional training, often dominated by the transmission of knowledge, the processes of teaching and learning based on the development of skills considered crucial in order to prepare professionals able to adapt to constant changes found in most business sectors.

The School of Health Sciences was founded in 1973 as the nursing school of Leiria. It is the oldest Higher Education Institution in Leiria Region. The School initiated its academic activities in 1973 and was later integrated in the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria (IPL) in 2001.
The ESSLei develops its training activity in the areas of Nursing and Health Sciences and Technology. The School also develops a broad and diverse set of research activities and community-related activities, within its areas of competence. This may confer a very specific nature to the teaching that is provided, involving students and teachers in activities that enhance the learning whether by research or by its implementation, in a strong relationship with local, regional and national health services.
Until 2009, this School was only committed to nursing training activities, offering undergraduate degree programmes in Nursing. Today the School presents the following 1st Cycle Degrees: Nursing; Physiotherapy; Occupational Therapy; Speech Therapy; and Dietetics.
ESSLei gives great importance to the Continuous Training, offering Specialization Courses, Post-Graduation and Master Degrees Programs in the field of Nursing and Health Sciences and Technology.
In total, ESSLei has more than 1200 students in its campus attending the different training programs and 115 teachers.
Besides the training activities in the Campus, the School has been developing a great number of projects (educational, training, research and international cooperation) implemented through strategic partnerships with national and international institutions. In this domain, besides the European dimension, there is a considerable cooperation with Portuguese Speaking African Countries and with Brazil.
Regarding the infrastructures, ESSLei develops its activities in a teaching building with classrooms, laboratories (physiotherapy, electrotherapy, assisted bath, maternal and child health, nursing techniques 1, nursing techniques 2, adapted apartment, anatomy, basic physics) and a conference room.
Today ESSLei is a regional and national landmark with former students spread throughout the world. Together with the other four Schools contributes to consolidate IPLeiria as a reference institution in the country
