5 Exhibitions on Limit

“Espaços Expositivos” Students

A limit can be an end, a border, a condition. A line that defines, contains, confines, enables. In the context of a collection, what defines what goes in and what goes out? What line is this? It is, in essence, an invitation to design and exhibit what typically remains behind, before, invisible: the criteria or rules that define the outside and the inside.
Stating that this exercise had a Limit subject is almost like saying that the subject was Free. But to be free, you must know the conditions. Without the knowledge of what conditions us, we will not know what sets us free. This exercise had a deadline, an exhibition space, and other limits at the outset.
And what other containment lines were there for each of the student collectives? And how were these limits made visible, designed, and exhibited? The limit determines both the end and the possibility of beginning. On January 10th at 3pm, we will be able to see, in different places of Caldas da Rainha, the 5 proposals on Limit from the multidisciplinary collectives of ESAD.CR students from the degree courses in Industrial Design, Interior and Spatial Design, Graphic and Multimedia Design, Sound and Image and Programming and Cultural Production, worked within the scope of the unit Exhibition Spaces, between October 2023 and January 2024.

TELHEIRO DO PARQUE D. CARLOS I, CALDAS DA RAINHA

Our mind can be compared to a tree. Our dreams and goals can be reached if we try hard enough to achieve them, but at the same time, we can let our own roots (insecurities and fears, for example) choke our ambitions and dreams, therefore creating a limit to their development.
Work carried out by: Ana Beatriz Silva, Booz García, Margarida Esteves and Luna Godinho.
The exhibition will be held in the Shed at Parque Dom Carlos I, from 7:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. from January 8th to January 10th.

Além das Linhas

Beatriz Monteverde (PPC), Fábio Costa (PPC), JP SIlva (DGM), Mariana Lucas (DE) e Samantha Peña (DE)

EXHIBITION
FROM THE 8TH TO THE 10TH OF JANUARY, 2024 – (10AM – 5PM)
SILOS – CONTENTOR – CRIATIVO, CALDAS DA RAINHA

It’s widely understood that artistic freedom seems to have few, if any, limits. However, when we really look into the matter, we begin to notice that we are conditioned to follow various rules when creating art, since our childhood, such as painting within the lines, defining margins for the drawing or drawing faces symmetrically, all of which evolve over the years, and end up becoming rules of anatomy and notions of perspective, rules that in no way define what is and isn’t art, but which are used to evaluate us throughout our academic career.
This exhibition has the objective to challenge these rules, by placing the work of children, teenagers and young adults made in a classroom context and done freely side by side, giving the viewer the chance to question these rules, their influence on artistic production and the abandonment of creating art by many young people.

Sinestesia

Alicia Costa (PPC), Carolina Lucas (DI), Diogo Nobre (DI), Inês Mota (DE) e Nyx Braz (PPC)

EXHIBITION
JANUARY 10TH, 2024 – (9AM -12.30PM AND 2PM-5.30PM)
OPENING: JANUARY 10TH AT 3PM
MUSEU BARATA FEIO, CALDAS DA RAINH

The exhibition, entitled Synesthesia, will be held on 10 January at the Barata Feyo Museum by students from the Spatial Design, Industrial Design and Cultural Programming and Production degrees at the School of Arts and Design (ESAD.CR), and aims to address the issue of the limits of exploring synesthesia through human senses such as sight, smell, hearing and touch. They will be exhibited with graphic, odour, sound and other textured elements. The aim is to activate and explore the individual interpretation of a continuous melody in the space by associating it with the aforementioned elements, so that everyone’s experience is immersive. The event will also feature a brief introduction by the organisers at 3pm.

Condenável ou Contornável?
Onde é que desenhas o teu limite?

Inês Nunes (DGM), Lara Bregieiro (DE), João Santiago (DI), Maria Stoer (PPC) e Rita Baleia (PPC)

EXHIBITION
JANUARY 10TH, 2024 – (3PM – 6PM)
IGREJA DO ESPÍRITO SANTO – LARGO JOÃO DE DEUS, CALDAS DA RAINHA

A provocative and participatory exhibition that invites everyone to immerse themselves in a debate on the limits of violence. Is it justifiable? To what extent?
Through a variety of artistic expressions and news stories dealing with the presence of violence, viewers themselves are challenged to draw conclusions to determine who is the victim and who is guilty.
Students from the Exhibition Spaces Unit were challenged to work on the theme of “limit” in a wide ranging way, exploring a limit of their choice. Considering that violence is one of the most widely recognized problems throughout history, some of the students chose to test this limit through this exhibition and the public´s participation.
