Design for Adaptability

Rute Gomes

OPEN CLASS
FEBRUARY 26TH OF 2024, 10.30AM
ROOM 26 OF EP1

Designers have the responsibility to develop solutions that contribute towards a more sustainable consumption. One of the Design for Sustainability (DfS) strategies is based on extending the time of use of a product. It is not enough, however, to develop products whose materials have a long lifespan, as these may no longer be necessary over time and become obsolete.

Design for Adaptability (DfA) is a design approach that proposes the adoption of strategies that promote the adaptation of a given product to the needs its user over time. Needs can vary in three dimensions: i) functional, ii) cultural and iii) technological. In this session, we propose to expose the approach of DfA as a strategy of design thinking, seeking to launch to the «Esadian» community the challenge of interpretation and speculation of rhythms of use, in different contexts.

The Spatial Design Undergraduate Programme invites you.

This is the second edition of the Workshops Design for Adaptability, a perspective of future needs, between the two intervening entities and jointly organized by Assistant Researcher Rute Gomes (FAUL – Department of Design) and Adjunct Professor Célia Gomes (ESAD. CR – Degree in Space Design).
It is intended to foster design methodologies among Design students that promote solutions framed in the theme of Design for Adaptability, from the point of view of environmental sustainability and the use of space, throughout time. It is aimed that students acquire reflective skills, as well as creative tools, which help them to question present and future contexts, when developing a project. It should be noted that the objective of fostering more sustainable design practices is framed in the Programs developed in the degree courses in Interior and Spatial Design and Product Design at ESAD. CR and FAUL, respectively.
Each workshop consists of three sessions. The number of students should be between 15 and 25. The duration of the contact period is 12 hours.
