SOUND ARTS
Notes for the study of nature: Listening rites

Nuno da Luz

ARTISTIC RESIDENCIES  OF THE MASTER’S PROGRAMME IN ARTS OF SOUND AND IMAGE_ESAD.CR  IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE CULTURAL ASSOCIATION OSSO_3RD EDITION_2024
15 TO 19 APRIL, 2024
OSSO FACILITIES IN THE VILLAGE OF S. GREGÓRIO, CALDAS DA RAINHA

A workshop to share methodologies aimed at decentralising the space between the two ears. Focussed entirely on a practice of attentive listening, this short space of time – a period of five days – will be reserved for bringing hearing down from the head to the feet, or by placing it at the fingertips, travelling through the body as vibrating matter, a meeting place for internal and external resonances. Through a series of mindfulness exercises and collective improvisation practices, we will not be studying the supposed “Nature” (with a capital N) of the classic Nature/Culture dichotomy and separation, but rather diverting, via sonic pedagogy, towards a nature-culture in which we are invited to take part via rituals of introduction, awareness and mutual responsibility.

NUNO DA LUZ (Lisbon, 1984). Artist and publisher whose work circumscribes the aural and the visual in the form of installations, performances and printed material. His practice wavers between noise ecologies, attentive listening and bookmaking (through the publishing collective ATLAS, in collaboration with the artist Gonçalo Sena). He is currently developing a doctoral research project in sound arts at the UCP Porto School of Arts, entitled “Echologies of Noise”, which deals with more-than-human ways of creating sound worlds. In 2015, he completed the Master’s programme Experimentation in Arts and Politics, founded by philosopher Bruno Latour, at Sciences Po Paris, and co-founded the indisciplinary collective COYOTE – which takes intersectionality as its method and theme, crossing conceptual and experimental forms (in collaboration with Tristan Bera, Elida Høeg, Clémence Seurat and Ana Vaz). Since 2014, he has been developing the performance series “with Assisted Resonance”, in which he uses the resonances and surrounding sound of each space in conjunction with live instruments, with past presentations at Appleton [Box] (Lisbon), Matadero (Madrid), CentroCentro (Madrid), Centro Botín (Santander), Flux Factory (New York), and ZK/U (Berlin), among other venues.

His most recent projects include the solo exhibitions “Heart of Sky Centro do Vento” (gnration, Braga, 2021), and “Transverberation” (Galeria Vera Cortês, Lisbon, 2019); the group exhibitions “Feral Ballads” (Cité Internationale des arts, Paris, 2024), and Biennale Ghërdeina ∞ Persones Persons (Ortisei, 2022); the monograph “Poetry as an echological survival (Lisboa/Porto: Documenta/UCEditora, 2022), and the double disc “Beasts of Gravity”, in collaboration with the artist Joana Escoval (London: The Vinyl Factory, 2019).
