What is an instrument?

SOUND ARTS
MAY 4TH TO 8TH OF 2026
OSSO FACILITIES IN THE VILLAGE OF S. GREGÓRIO, CALDAS DA RAINHA

Starting from the region’s traditional instruments (if possible, researching/finding instruments from the region or even traditional objects capable of producing sound), this proposal raises the question: “what is an instrument?”, and how an object bearing cultural identity can merge with other contexts or be reintegrated into a different environment. Does it lose its sonic identity?
Conceived as an installation-performance, it will take shape as a sensory and process-based space, where sound and the instrumental body or bodies engage in real time. The project may focus on recordings of traditional instruments/objects and their display, as well as on their use in a real-time composition, in which they are manipulated and transformed live, or on recordings that may be played simultaneously. The use of multimedia (video of traditional instruments and their exploration in the context of image processing) may also be included should participants wish to cross disciplines.
More than a final object, this proposal aims to be a living process of listening, composition and transformation, in which tradition and contemporaneity intertwine, projecting new ways of thinking about and inhabiting Portuguese cultural heritage.

ACCOUNTS OF THE END AND THE BEGINNING

“Many years later, standing before the firing squad, Colonel Aureliano Buendía would remember that distant afternoon when his father took him to see ice for the first time.” – from One Hundred Years of Solitude, by Gabriel García Márquez
Filming what cannot be seen. How much of what we see is imagined? In this residency, I propose working on the documentary gesture through imaginary elements.
Starting from myths, stories, fantastical accounts, memories and other small narratives, I propose a collective reflection on the ideas of ending and beginning: of the day, of life, of a house, of a relationship, of a piece of work, of a tree, of an object, of the world, etc. — the end and the beginning in intimacy, in everyday life, in nature… From this shared investigation, we will approach the everyday life of São Gregório, looking in the reality around us for echoes of this reflection. The creative process will unfold in a cyclical movement: we will devote ourselves successively to gathering and sharing stories, to writing, to sound and to image, returning then to writing, and so on, working with these elements separately.

Tiago Hespanha (1978) is a filmmaker and producer and has collaborated with various artists from different fields (film, dance, theatre, performance, music). He holds a degree in architecture. He has been a directing tutor on the international documentary master’s programme DocNomads since 2012. He has been a member of Ateliers Varan since 2014.
