International Scientific Diver Course
We are pleased to welcome you to the CMAS International Scientific Diver Course, an intensive, field-based training program taking place in Peniche and the Berlengas Marine Protected Area, Portugal, from 29 April to 10 May 2026.
Hosted by the Marine and Environmental Research Centre (MARE) of the Polytechnic University of Leiria and delivered in collaboration with CMAS Portugal, this course is designed for postgraduate students, researchers, and professionals seeking internationally recognized training in scientific diving. The program is conducted in accordance with CMAS standards and ISO 8804-1:2024.
Participants will engage in a unique combination of theoretical instruction, practical skill development, and real scientific fieldwork, culminating in a 24/7 scientific training expedition within the Berlengas Marine Protected Area, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. This exceptional setting offers a rare opportunity to develop scientific diving competencies while working in one of Portugal’s most ecologically significant marine environments.
Throughout the course, participants will work closely with experienced scientific diving instructors, researchers, medical doctors, and specialists in diving equipment and hyperbaric medicine, gaining hands-on experience in underwater survey methods, data collection, risk management, and team-based scientific operations.
We look forward to welcoming participants to Peniche and the Berlengas Marine Protected Area for an intensive programme of learning, collaboration, and scientific discovery.

REGISTRATION PROCESS
Please submit the following documents to scientific.diving@ipleiria.pt and secretaria@cmasportugal.pt until 9 March 2026:
- Diving Curriculum Vitae detailing certifications, total logged dives and hours, and relevant experience.
- Letter of Motivation outlining the applicant’s academic and/or scientific background and motivation for attending the course; for student applicants, the letter will also be used to assess eligibility for travel grants, which must be explicitly requested and justified.
- Copies of diving certifications.
- Completed and signed registration form available here
- Digital photo for your proflie.
Applicants will be notified of their acceptance by 16 March 2026, together with detailed instructions regarding payment.
TRAVEL GRANTS

Curso Internacional de Mergulho Científico – CMAS
Sejam bem-vindos ao Curso Internacional de Mergulhador Científico CMAS, uma formação intensiva e prática que decorrerá em Peniche e na Área Marinha Protegida das Berlengas, de 29 de abril a 10 de maio de 2026.
Organizado pelo Centro de Investigação Marinha e Ambiental (MARE) da ESTM-Politécnico de Leiria, em colaboração com a CMAS Portugal, este curso destina-se a estudantes de pós-graduação, investigadores e profissionais que pretendam obter uma certificação internacional em mergulho científico. O programa cumpre os padrões da CMAS e a norma ISO 8804-1:2024.
Ao longo do curso, os participantes terão acesso a uma combinação única de aulas teóricas, treino prático e trabalho de campo real, culminando numa expedição científica contínua na Área Marinha Protegida das Berlengas, classificada como Reserva da Biosfera da UNESCO. Este cenário privilegiado oferece uma oportunidade rara para desenvolver competências em mergulho científico, num dos ecossistemas marinhos mais ricos e importantes de Portugal.
Durante a formação, os participantes irão trabalhar de perto com instrutores de mergulho científico, investigadores, médicos e especialistas em equipamento de mergulho e medicina hiperbárica, adquirindo experiência prática em levantamentos subaquáticos, recolha de dados, gestão de riscos e trabalho em equipa.
Esperamos por todos em Peniche e nas Berlengas para um programa intenso de aprendizagem, partilha e descoberta científica.

- Currículo de Mergulho com detalhe das certificações, total de mergulhos registados e horas, e experiência relevante.
- Carta de Motivação explicando a formação académica/científica e o motivo para frequentar o curso; para estudantes, serve também para avaliar elegibilidade a apoios de viagem (peça explicitamente e justifique).
- Cópias das certificações de mergulho.
- Ficha de Inscrição preenchida e assinada, disponível aqui.
- Foto digital para o perfil.
Os candidatos serão informados da aceitação até 16 de março de 2026, juntamente com instruções detalhadas sobre o pagamento.
APOIOS DE VIAGEM
Serão atribuídos dois apoios de viagem (€500 cada) pelo MARE – IPLeiria a estudantes elegíveis, com base na avaliação das suas cartas de motivação. Os apoios serão aplicados como desconto na propina do curso.
