Dia Mundial do Turismo 2025

O turismo é mais do que uma atividade económica: é motor de inclusão, inovação e sustentabilidade. O futuro exige uma transformação responsável, capaz de regenerar comunidades, proteger a natureza e criar oportunidades para todos.

A formação superior em turismo, hospitalidade e lazer — em particular a desenvolvida pela ESTM do Politécnico de Leiria — tem um papel central neste caminho, reforçado pelos projetos de investigação do CiTUR-IPLeiria, como o FAST, a Plataforma ORVE e o InnovTourism.

A ESTM e a sua unidade de investigação CiTUR-IPLeiria estão e estarão sempre disponíveis para dar o seu contributo para a transformação sustentável do Turismo.

Message from dean of ESTM

World Tourism Day 2025

Tourism is more than an economic activity: it is a driver of inclusion, innovation, and sustainability. The future calls for a responsible transformation, capable of regenerating communities, protecting nature, and creating opportunities for all.

Higher education in tourism, hospitality and leisure, particularly at the School of Tourism and Maritime Technology (ESTM) of the Polytechnic of Leiria — plays a central role in this mission, strengthened by the research projects of CiTUR-IPLeiria, such as FAST, the ORVE Platform, and InnovTourism.

The ESTM and its research unit CiTUR-IPLeiria are and will always be available to contribute to the sustainable transformation of Tourism.

A Escola Superior de Turismo e Tecnologia do Mar (ESTM), do Politécnico de Leiria, associa-se às comemorações do Dia Mundial do Turismo, uma iniciativa instituída pela UNWTO e celebrada todos os anos a 27 de setembro. Esta data tem como objetivo destacar a importância cultural, económica, política e social do turismo, promovendo a reflexão sobre os desafios e oportunidades que marcam o setor a nível global.

A ESTM tem participado de forma ativa nestas celebrações, alinhando-se com as orientações da Organização Mundial de Turismo (UNWTO). Esta participação reflete o compromisso contínuo da escola em contribuir para um turismo mais sustentável, inclusivo e inovador, valorizando o papel da educação e da investigação na construção do futuro do setor.

Em 2025, a ESTM assinala a data com a realização de uma conferência no dia 29 de setembro, às 14h30, no Auditório da escola em Peniche, dedicada ao tema “Turismo e Transformação Sustentável”. O encontro contará com a apresentação e discussão de iniciativas que estão a marcar o futuro do setor, como a certificação Biosphere, o projeto FAST e o InnovTourism (IPLeiria), explorando a forma como estes exemplos estão a ligar sustentabilidade, formação, inovação e digitalização.

A participação é aberta a toda a comunidade e constitui uma oportunidade única para debater ideias e celebrar em conjunto o futuro do turismo.

World Tourism Day 2025: Tourism and Sustainable Transformation

World Tourism Day 2025 highlights tourism’s transformative potential as an agent of positive change. Realizing this potential, however, demands more than growth alone. It requires good governance, strategic planning, robust monitoring and clear priority setting that align with long-term sustainability goals. Tourism is more than an economic sector, it is a catalyst for social progress, delivering education, employment and creating new opportunities for all. To unlock these benefits, a deliberate and inclusive approach is essential, one that places sustainability, resilience and social equity at the core of tourism development and decision-making.

Message For World Tourism Day

“Tourism is a powerful driver of transformation.

It creates jobs, fuels local economies, supports infrastructure and contributes to development far beyond GDP.

Tourism strengthens bonds between people and places. It builds bridges across cultures, preserves traditions and restores cultural heritage.  It reminds us of our shared humanity – and the richness of diversity.

Yet tourism can also damage the very places and communities it celebrates.

As the world faces climate breakdown and rising inequalities, we need bold, urgent, and sustainable action that puts people and planet first.

This year’s theme – “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation” – calls us to action.

That means investing in education and skills, especially for women, youth, and marginalized communities; supporting micro, small and medium-sized enterprises; and advancing climate action by reducing emissions across the tourism sector, conserving biodiversity, and protecting fragile ecosystems.

Today, and every day, let’s harness the power of tourism as a force for transformation, resilience, sustainability, and shared progress for all.”
