Nazanin Sabet
My name is Nazanin Sabet, and I am originally from Iran. In 2018, I moved to Portugal to pursue my master’s degree at Politécnico de Leiria (IPL), where I found the English program, I was looking for – Product Design Engineering. I completed my studies in 2021, and it has been a transformative journey.
I realized Portugal was an ideal destination for my studies when I learned about its rich heritage in the ceramic sector, which aligns perfectly with my professional background in ceramics. Politécnico de Leiria was my top choice as it offered the specific master’s program I wanted, taught in English. I was also drawn to its calm and positive environment, greatly facilitating my transition to living and studying abroad.
One of my best memories is working at the Erasmus program in the international office. It was incredibly fulfilling to help students from various cultures feel welcome and integrated, while I, too, learned a great deal from them. Additionally, the support I received from the school’s therapists was invaluable, as it helped me navigate cultural differences and feel more at home. I also have fond memories of exploring the CDRSP research center, where I delved into Additive Manufacturing, expanding my knowledge in ways I hadn’t anticipated.
Coming from a metropolitan area, I initially found it challenging to adjust to a smaller, more close-knit environment. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the warmth and hospitality of the Portuguese people. Their appreciation for art, particularly ceramic art, and the emphasis on enjoying nature really resonated with me. These cultural aspects helped me find new ways to connect with my surroundings and feel a part of the community.
I am currently a Sustainability Manager for companies that extract and process ceramic raw materials. In this role, I focus on responsible sourcing and implementing sustainable practices, allowing me to apply my expertise and passion for ceramics in meaningful ways.
Beyond my professional responsibilities, I am engaged in various sustainability and community-based initiatives. I also work closely with art schools, supporting ceramic art students and promoting the responsible sourcing of materials. This allows me to give back to the artistic community while aligning with my personal values.
IPLeiria has been instrumental in my growth, both professionally and personally. The exposure to diverse cultures through the Erasmus program broadened my understanding and adaptability, which has been invaluable in my career. Personally, the support system and opportunities for engagement, such as the therapists and cultural events, helped me feel grounded and connected in a new environment. The experience at CDRSP further enriched my professional knowledge, especially in Additive Manufacturing, which has been a fascinating aspect of ceramics technology.
I hope the Alumni Network continues fostering connections among graduates and creates opportunities for networking, mentorship, and career development opportunities. It would be wonderful to see more events that bring together alumni with diverse backgrounds to share experiences and insights. I would also suggest that the network facilitates more interactions with current students, which can be mutually enriching and beneficial for everyone involved.
