59.º European Marine Biology Symposium (EMBS)

The School of Tourism and Maritime Technology (ESTM) of the Polytechnic University of Leiria will host the 59th European Marine Biology Symposium (EMBS), to be held from 7 to 10 July 2026 in Peniche. The event is organised by ESTM in collaboration with MARE – Marine and Environmental Sciences Centre, bringing together researchers and professionals dedicated to the study of marine ecosystems.

Established in 1966, the European Marine Biology Symposium is one of the longest-running and most prestigious scientific meetings in the marine sciences, promoting knowledge exchange and collaboration among specialists from across the breadth of marine biology. Over the decades, the symposium has played a central role in discussing scientific advances and emerging challenges related to the ocean.

For the 2026 edition, around 250 researchers and professionals are expected to attend, from across Europe as well as other continents, reinforcing the event’s international scope. Over four days, Peniche will host scientific presentations, discussion sessions and opportunities for networking and exchange, contributing to a deeper understanding of marine biodiversity, ecosystem conservation and ocean sustainability.

Hosting the 59th EMBS in Peniche also provides an opportunity to showcase the work developed at ESTM and by its researchers in biology and marine sciences, further strengthening the position of ESTM and the Polytechnic University of Leiria as leading institutions in ocean-related research and education.
