Enrolment and Registration
Enrolment and registration for new students
Enrolment and registration dates are set annually by the Portuguese Directorate General for Higher Education (DGES).
At Politécnico de Leiria, this is all done online, via the Student Portal.

From the moment the registration process begins, with the payment of accident/incident insurance and/or the first instalment of your tuition fees, you will be required to pay all the installments of your tuition fees for that academic year.
Regardless of how many curricular units you will be studying during the academic year, your tuition fees will not be reduced.

You will need the following mandatory documentation to register with Politécnico de Leiria:
- Copy of your ID card – cartão de cidadão (for Portuguese nationals) or a valid ID/passport (for foreign nationals),
- Copy of proof of Taxpayer/National Insurance Number, which may be present on your ID card,
- Copy of proof of tetanus vaccine with expiry date.
For applicants admitted to the School of Health Sciences, it is also mandatory to bring proof of achievement of the prerequisite Interpersonal Communication – Group A (type of proof: medical questionnaire declaration).
For applicants admitted to the Speech Therapy course, it is also mandatory to bring a declaration written by a Speech Therapist, attesting the absence of language and/or speech disorders and the mastery of oral and written Portuguese language.
There are academic precedence rules to which students have to obey when registering, specifically in health sciences, teacher training and arts and design courses.
Your first/second phase application will be automatically cancelled, as well as the registration and enrolment that you may have carried out.
No. The higher education institution where you were admitted in the first/second phase of the National Call will send your documentation to the institution where you were admitted in the third phase.
Be aware that you will only be required to pay the total amount of your tuition fees less the amount paid at the institution where you have been accepted in the previous phase.
Registration for returning students
Yes. Every academic year, you need to renew your registration with Politécnico de Leiria, by the deadline stated in the academic calendar, which is always before the start of the academic year.
The registration is done via the Student Portal.
From the moment your renew your application, with the payment of accident/incident insurance and/or the first installment of your tuition fees, you will be required to pay the tuition fees for that academic year.
Regardless of how many curricular units you will be studying during the academic year, your tuition fees will not be reduced.

Yes. Students who have applied to change institution/course but were not successful, and were legally registered and enrolled in a course in the previous academic year, can register in the course they were studying before within 7 days from the results announcement.
Cancellation of registration and enrolment
You must write a formal letter, addressed to the Executive Dean of your school, requesting the cancellation of registration/enrolment and send it to the Academic Services.
You must pay all your tuition fees installments until the date Academic Services receive your request and only if:
- The request for cancellation of registration/enrolment is submitted by the 31st October of the current academic year, for courses starting in the first semester,
- Or the request for cancellation of registration/enrolment is submitted by the 31st March of the current academic year, for courses starting in the second semester.
You must pay the tuition fees in full in case you don’t meet the above specified cancellation deadlines.
Expiration of the right to register
Expiration is defined as the loss of the right to register for the course you were studying in the previous year due to not meeting the academic success criteria established by Politécnico de Leiria.

No, but you will need to provide us with a a declaration issued by an Hospital, Health Centre or a certificate issued by a doctor.
Training or work experience accreditation
It is the recognition of previous training and work experience by a higher education institution and consequent assignment of academic ECTS.
By recognizing the skills acquired through work experience and the training carried out previously, students can complete their studies faster.
The Scientific Committee of each school decides on this type of accreditation.
Requests for training or work experience accreditation must be submitted together with the application to access higher education.
Yes. You will have to pay accreditation fees in the moment you submit your application.

You will need the following documentation to request the recognition of this status:
- Public sector workers:
- Declaration from your department service, authenticated with a white seal, stating the name, career and professional category, type of contract, ID card number (cartão de cidadão for Portuguese nationals or a valid ID/passport (for foreign nationals), Taxpayer/National Insurance Number, which may be present on your ID card, social security sub-system number (Caixa Geral de Aposentações or Social Security).
- Private sector workers:
- Declaration from the employer, duly authenticated, and a document proving Social Security affiliation, duly updated and validated by the entity.
- Self-employed workers:
- Declaration of business start/restart of activity authenticated by the Portuguese Tax Authority, and a duly updated and official declaration proving the worker is registered with Social Security.
Student Special Statuses Regulation of Politécnico de Leiria
If you have any of the physical or mental health conditions and learning differences listed below, you can request the Special Educational Needs Status.
- Locomotor and physical disability
- Blindness and visual impairment
- Hearing loss and impairment
- Mental health difficulty
- Long-term medical condition
- Development disorder, such as autistic spectrum condition, or a specific learning difference, such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia or ADHD
- Physical or mental health illness that affects your academic performance

Student assessment
The student assessment types used at Politécnico de Leiria are:
- Continuous assessment – Day-to-day feedback about the learning and teaching process.
- Regular assessment – Cumulative work over an extended period such as a final project or creative portfolio or end-of-unit or chapter tests.
- Summative assessment – End of semester exams (Main Examination Period, Referral Examination Period e Special Examination Period).
Students can access end of semester exams when they were not successful in continuous or regular assessment or when curricular units are only assessed through summative assessment.
- Main Examination Period – the registration is automatic.
Students can access Special Examination Period exams when they were not successful in previous examination periods.
Complaining and improving grades
Complaints of written exam results must be formally submitted within 3 working days from the date the results were published, accompanied by a proof of payment of the complaint fee.
Complaints of oral exam results must be formally submitted within 2 working days from the date the results were published, accompanied by a proof of payment of the complaint fee.
Yes. We will reimburse you all fees paid for complaints and Supplementary Examination Period exams in which you were successful, even if only at the end.
