Polytechnic University of Leiria Moves Forward with the Construction and Renovation of Student Residences in Leiria
On February 10, 2025, the Polytechnic University of Leiria officially assigned consignment documents for the renovation of the existing student residence complex in Leiria, located next to the institution’s Central Services, and the construction of the new ‘Nova Leiria’ residence, also near the institute’s headquarters. This represents an investment of €11.25 million, funded by the National Plan for Higher Education Housing (PNAES)—Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR). These two projects will allow the institution to offer 190 additional beds in Leiria.
The renovation project involves four buildings, focusing not only on their complete refurbishment to improve comfort and enhance energy efficiency but also on space reconfiguration and operational optimization.
Once completed, the renovated residence complex will provide 458 beds, an increase of 25 beds compared to the current 433. The renovation is expected to be completed within one year.
Meanwhile, the ‘Nova Leiria’ student residence, which is being built simultaneously, will consist of five floors, featuring 83 new rooms and a total of 165 beds. The project is scheduled for completion in June 2026.
“This new residence will not only provide accommodation but also include dining areas, study and social spaces, a small gym, a laundry facility, and other essential amenities. The project was designed with a strong focus on sustainability and energy efficiency, incorporating passive design solutions such as optimal solar orientation, natural lighting, and cross-ventilation to reduce energy consumption and enhance residents’ well-being,” emphasized Carlos Rabadão, President of the Polytechnic University of Leiria.
Additionally, the Polytechnic University of Leiria is planning the renovation and repurposing of the historic Santo Estêvão Building into a new student residence with a capacity of 101 beds, with the project currently in the public tender phase.
