Programme Introduction

The Programme in Artistic Creation (PDCA) is a doctoral programme of the University of Aveiro in association with the Polytechnic Institutes of Leiria and Porto. This Doctoral Programme promotes a transdisciplinary strategy for the development of experimental creative thinking, welcoming candidates with an interest in creative practices, namely in the areas of Plastic Arts, Sonic Arts, Visual Arts, Dance, Theatre and Music. This cycle of studies was born out of exchanges between researchers from the institutions involved, either within the scope of projects they shared, or within the scope of various initiatives such as congresses, festivals, exhibitions, colloquia or other events.

The associated institutions complement the DP offer by adding disciplinary areas that the UA lacks as well as human resources for teaching and supervision, and also by providing logistical support (spaces, laboratories and equipment). Thus, the association with ESAD.CR (IPL) consolidates fundamental areas such as Ceramics, Animation Cinema, Drawing, Sculpture, Film, Photography, Engraving and Painting, and opens access to the respective specialized technical workshops. On the other hand, the association to the IPP Schools consolidates fundamental areas such as Sound Arts and Music Technologies, Dance and Theatre (ESMAE) and also Documentary Cinema (ESMAD), also opening the access to the spaces and laboratories related to these areas.

O DECA of the University of Aveiro has a distinctive role in the preparation of its post-graduate students in the areas of contemporary Artistic Creation, Design and Music. Both at the UA and at the partner institutions of this cycle of studies, classes in the various above referred contexts will be guaranteed by artists, professionals, researchers and teachers of recognized national and international merit; thus, students will have a unique opportunity to study artistic creation in an environment of academic and professional excellence. The created network of institutions and teachers and the structure of the study plan allows a form of teaching-learning, supervision and customised research anchored in facilities, technical workshops and various research centers that will contribute to a unique intellectual and creative environment nationally and internationally.

Objectives

Programme

The course aims at the advanced training of specialists and researchers in the field of Art Studies and the creation of a shared space for artistic experimentation and research, effectively transdisciplinary in order to:

  1. Generate new knowledge from artistic creation that allows new approaches to reality and reinvent knowledge in a context of diverse cultural and natural resources on global and local scales;
  2. To contribute to creativity, critical thinking and the ability to work in transdisciplinary contexts, allowing the generation of hybrid forms of knowledge based on practice;
  3. To consolidate the notion of Creative Thinking as a sensitive epistemic, critical and experimental reflection of the poietic-poetic process of artistic production, work, the body of works, practices and other singular derivations, which are part of the artistic and life experience of the doctoral student.

Programme

At the end of this course, PhD Art Studies graduates will be able to:

  • to configure a ‘corpus of work’ that allows new artistic productions and their singular modes of writing;
  • to develop research-action-participation projects in different scales of the territory;
